In light of all the fuss over the Arizona immigration law, it is interesting to compare some similar so called injustices during my lifetime in a satirical way:
Every time I fly on a plane my rights are violated. I am violated with both a body scan and search and have to show identification. I am only happy that I do not fit the profile of individuals that are placed on the “no fly list” by our government. Life is so unfair!
My rights were violated every time I entered a bar and was asked for identification. This was true even if I was not going to drink. Life is so unfair!
My rights are violated every time I drive since I have to carry identification and proof of insurance and registration. Life is so unfair!
My rights are violated every time I go to the doctors’ office or hospital. I have to not only show my identification but proof of my healthcare insurance too. Life is so unfair.
My rights were violated every day of my work career since I had to wear identification that was proof of my employment. What’s worse, I had to go through random drug tests. My employer even forced me to show proof that I completed my college education before they would let me start. The organizations I supported never received the same support from my employer as for instance Muslim groups, who received special foot bath and prayer rooms. Life is so unfair!
My rights were violated every time I wrote a check or used my credit card and the merchant asked to see my identification. Life is so unfair!
Even though I was poor I was always passed over for college scholarships and intern jobs in favor of more diverse candidates. Life is so unfair!
My rights are violated every time I joined an organization or purchased something since they sold my demographic information to other entities that harassed me with a constant barrage of mail, email, and phone calls. Life is so unfair!
My rights are violated every time I go to a conference or party and they expect me to wear a name tag. Life is so unfair!
My rights are violated ever time I volunteer because they do a background check. And what’s worse, one requirement for volunteer jobs with children is that we must get our fingerprints on record with the authorities. Life is so unfair!
My rights are violated every time I have to fill out a form for employment, volunteering, organizations, the census, a credit card, and so forth because they ask personal questions about my ethnicity, income, social security number, and past history. Life is so unfair!
My rights are violated every time I make a major purchase such as a car or home because the loan companies do a background check on my credit history. Life is so unfair!
My rights are violated every time I traveled abroad since I had to carry my passport identification on my person at all times. Life is so unfair!
My rights are violated every time I vote since I have to show both identification and proof of my voter registration. Life is so unfair!
Yes, I do not blame those illegal and legal Hispanics for being so upset over the new immigration law that requires them to carry proof of citizenship. It is a human rights violation and it is so unfair!
