No president should be learning on the job. The United States literally has hundreds of people who have the necessary experience to do the job; it should never have come down to having Barack Obama as our president. It would be wise to create a list of criteria that a candidate should meet to qualify for a presidential run. However, the president, or any congressional jobs have no specific experience requirements other than age. Besides that, the only thing most politicians have in common is that they are wealthy. Thus, they have the necessary funding for expensive campaigns, but this does not mean these candidates are qualified to be president or congressmen. What requirements should be a prerequisite for a candidate to run for President of the United States (POTUS)?
Probably the most important prerequisite for President should be extensive leadership experience. Really, the important thing is for a candidate to exhibit good leadership qualities prior to being in office. Remember, most people are followers and there is no guarantee a President will develop the necessary leadership skills on the job. There are several ways to obtain leadership skills and ability. First, an individual may exhibit and develop leadership skills by successfully running a business or any profit / loss organization. This would demonstrate an individuals’ capacity at understanding basic fiscal philosophies to succeed in our capitalistic economy. Secondly, politics is another way to achieve executive leadership skills. Congressmen are merely legislative leaders and really do not have any practical leadership skills to be president. On the other hand, governors and mayors of major cities are executive leaders and are responsible for maintaining a budget. Thus, these leaders have more practical leadership skills to be the president than congressional members.
Mitt Romney, for instance, was governor of Massachusetts; he has successfully created and run businesses, and was responsible for successfully managing the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. These are all practical items to place on a resume to be president. Romney, therefore, has astute business acumen and understands the economy. He understands how to balance a budget, the implications of taxes, and how to create jobs. On the other hand, Barack Obama has not managed anything nor has he been an executor. Thus, Obama does not have the necessary fiscal experience to run the United States. And his fiscal irresponsibility is showing as he runs up massive debts with wasteful, inefficient, and bureaucratic stimulus spending, entitlement spending, and climate change taxes. After all, Obama’s abysmal crisis management skills should not surprise anyone who’s most qualifying job to be POTUS was running the Harvard Law Review.
Another way to obtain practical leadership skills includes military service - especially in times of war. It is not surprising many presidents have military leadership backgrounds including Washington, Jackson, Harrison, Teddy Roosevelt, Grant, and Eisenhower to name a few. These leaders may arguably be best fit to tackle any national crisis, since war is a daily battle with one crisis after another.
Other prerequisites for the job of POTUS only pale in comparison when it comes to leadership. Ethics is probably the second most desired trait for any president. People want a person they can trust and that is why ethics is important. Once Bill Clinton lied about cheating on Hillary, he lost all his credibility and was no longer trustworthy. Obama’s background in Chicago politics and his ties to controversial figures such as Jeremiah Wright, Tony Rezko, Bill Ayers, and Rashid Khalidi, if anything, should have created doubt over Obama’s centrist claims and trustworthiness. It is no wonder Obama conveniently severed his long standing relationship with these controversial figures. But this has not stopped Obama from appointing many controversial figures into his administration as czars.
Obama’s lackluster performance managing our national budget and leading the nation through a crisis such as the recession and oil spill should not surprise anyone. He was not qualified to be president in the first place and is therefore, trying to learn on the job. But it is not working! What are some prerequisites that you think are necessary to be POTUS?
